Summer Institute

It’s the End of the World!

“I will show you fear in a handful of dust.”- T.S. Eliot

Live Ideas is launching its 2020 Summer Institute! The theme for this workshop is It’s the End of the World! Our goal is to prepare student publications for the Fall 2020 edition of the Live Ideas journal, which will highlight a special collection of submissions crafted during this quarantine period. If you already have an idea of what you want to submit or hope to brainstorm with others, then you are invited! The submissions should either explicitly deal with apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic themes, or at least be in the ballpark (e.g. an essay on climate change, a short story on aging, a poem about heartbreak, etc.). The Summer Institute will take place on July 8th through 13th from 7-8:30 PM CST. We will meet via ZOOM.

In these dark times, it is easy to feel disconnected from others that are experiencing the same anxious thoughts of what the future might hold. It is for this reason that Live Ideas is proud to present our It’s the End of the World! summer institute/workshop. Hosted in multiple sessions, students of several disciplines will undergo a workshop where they will have the chance to present and revise original or previously finished work relating to the themes of the world’s end. Submissions will be comprised of varying approaches: open to essays, short stories, poems, visual arts, and more. Scholarships of $250 will be provided for selected participants.

We can use this time to reflect on why these thoughts are so persistent, take solace in the solidarity we all share as human beings, and prepare ourselves for the bright future that lies ahead.
